How Team Generation Works

Creating fair teams is more complex than it might seem. Simply picking names out of a hat can lead to wildly unbalanced teams, especially when participants have varying skill levels. Our team generator uses sophisticated algorithms to ensure fairness while remaining fast and easy to use.

Random Snake Draft

Our default method shuffles participants randomly, then distributes them using a snake draft pattern. In round 1, teams pick 1→2→3→4. In round 2, the order reverses: 4→3→2→1. This alternating pattern ensures teams picking later in one round get earlier picks in the next, creating balanced team sizes.

Best for: General use when all participants are roughly equal skill level

Skill-Based Greedy Assignment

When you enable skill ratings, our algorithm sorts participants by skill (highest first) and uses a greedy approach with 2-member lookahead. For each person, it evaluates which team assignment would minimize the overall variance in team skill totals, then makes the optimal choice.

Best for: Competitive activities where balanced skill distribution matters

Random Pairs

For 1-on-1 matching, we use Fisher-Yates shuffling (the gold standard for random permutations) to randomize the list, then pair sequentially. Every possible pairing has equal probability.
